Tom Scully of EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale will be lining up in the seven-man squad to take on the 2018 edition of the Santos Tour Down Under. The 27 year old will join a team of primarily Australians who will be looking to get their season off to a strong start as well as introducing new members to the team Down Under.
Tom Scully first rode the Santos Tour Down Under in 2017 in his first year with what was then Cannondale-Drapac. The squad which features just two other non-Australians in Logan Owen from the USA and Spaniard Daniel Moreno will have a range of options to target with Moreno and Australia’s Brendan Canty being the team’s primary options for the general classification.
Sport Director Tom Southam is optimistic about the race and about the change in the course for this year. In a team statement he said, “We looked at Down Under and wanted to send the best possible team to this particular race. I’ve always thought you need Australians or neo-pros, which is who we have going.”
“I think it’s a good route. It’s different from the last few years in terms of the two hard days back-to-back, which is nice. I’m looking forward to getting out there and getting it going.”
“This race favours youth and enthusiasm, it favours someone who’s had an active off season – which are Australians, basically. It suits the home riders massively.”
Last year Scully had a breakthrough win in World Tour colours in the final stage of the Route du Sud and earned a call up to his first grand tour at the Vuelta a Espana. Other highlights of the 2017 season for Scully included debut outings at the Queen of the Classics, in Paris-Roubaix along with Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders and more in the early spring campaign.
