The BDO Tour of Northland heads into its 18th edition in 2018. The four-day race is presented by Dynamo Events and takes in a course that starts and finishes in Whangarei. A variety of motives exist for taking on the challenge, from those looking to simply complete a four-day stage race, to those looking to use the Tour as a building block in their season.
The Twin Coast Discovery Highway will be the focus of the four-day race that starts in Whangarei and heads to Russell on day 1, from Paihia to Opononi on day 2, onwards to Dargaville on day 3 and back to Whangarei on the final day of racing.
There is something refreshing about a stage race that incorporates a mixture of elites and leisurely riders keen to simply take on a new challenge. In the past the race has seen the likes of Gordon McCauley, Nick Bain, Joshua Kuysten, Joshua Aldridge, and world U23 mountain bike champion and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sam Gaze all race the event. Gaze himself won the race back in 2015 by just 4 seconds from Aldridge.
It’s a race that draws a highly diverse range of abilities and that’s part of the beauty of the event. The BDO Tour of Northland is a race that to some is a weekend of intense racing, but to others is another way to see New Zealand. “Northland is suitable to the very average rider, stages are only 80-100km you can be finished by 12noon and have the rest of the day to enjoy the region. It is for many just a long weekend away with a little bit of cycling added in,” Cox said.
