Dion Smith has led the charge for the Kiwis in stage 1 of the Herald Sun Tour.  The new signing for Mitchelton-SCOTT finished 7th in the opener on Philip Island as compatriot Tom Scully finished 8th after protecting stage winner Dan McLay of EF Education First Pro Cycling.

New Zealand’s favourite Aussie, Robert Stannard of Mitchelton-SCOTT, placed 5th across the line as McLay edged Kristoffer Halvorsen of Team Sky and EvoPro Racing’s Wouter Wippert for stage honours.

In the women’s race Chloe Hosking of Alé Cipollini took the stage win in a small group that finished 7 seconds clear of a big bunch containing Amanda Jamieson of Mike Greer Homes Women’s Cycling who led the Kiwi charge in 11th , with Jenna Merrick 13th, Elizabeth Stannard 18th of Gusto StepFWD KOM, Niamh Fisher-Black of Mike Greer Homes 19th and Georgia Williams of Mitchelton-SCOTT 20th.
