Bjorg Lambrecht has become the latest high profile professional cyclist to be killed during racing. The 22 year old Belgian crashed during stage 3 of the Tour de Pologne, was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.
Part way through stage 3 from Chorzów to Zabrze a crash occurred, bringing down Bjorg Lambrecht. He and Gazprom-RusVelo’s Aleksandr Vlasov were the only riders not to finish the stage, with Lambrecht being resuscitated and then taken to hospital. He was in a critical condition but he deteriorated from there.
Lambrecht was one of the most talented up and coming riders after a very strong 2019 season that saw him place in the top ten on six occasions. He won the young rider classification at the Criterium du Dauphiné, finished sixth at the Amstel Gold Race and 4th at Fleche Wallonne.
Among the many to pay tribute to the young rising star – including Mark Cavendish and stage 3 winner Pascal Ackermann – was Sam Bewley who took to Twitter, saying, “Absolutely heartbreaking to read this. The most sincere condolences and deepest symapthy’s to Bjorg family, friends and team mates. Rest In Peace Bjorg.”
Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to the Lambrecht family, to Lotto Soudal and his friends.
