Rushlee Buchanan has won the North Star Grand Prix opening time trial.  The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling rider was top of the pile after a very closely fought opening stage where the top seven were separated by 10 seconds or less.  Brianna Walle of TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank took second, with Taylor Wiles, teammate of Buchanan’s, in third.

At just 8km in length, the straight race against the clock that took the field along the Mississippi River was set to be one of the more decisive days in the general classification.  79 women lined up for the time trial with UnitedHealthcare showing very quickly that they would be a force to be reckoned with.  The team finished with 5 riders in the top 15, all within 25 seconds of the top of the leaderboard.  Buchanan ended up stopping the clock in 10.36mins, just under a second quicker than Brianna Walle and just 1 second faster than Tayler Wiles.  The top five in fact were separated by just 5 seconds.

Elyse Fraser of Cycling New Zealand also finished inside the top 20.  Her time of 11.08mins was good enough for 19th on the stage.  Meanwhile fellow Cycling New Zealand teammate Racquel Sheath took 35th, TIBCO-SVB’s Madeleine Park took 33rd, Bryony Botha placed 36th, Kirstie James placed 40th, Holly Edmondston placed 56th.

Madeleine Park sits highest of the Kiwis in the young rider classification, 6th overall, just ahead of Botha.  The two of them are 53 seconds and 57 seconds down respectively on classification leader Emma White of Rally Cycling.

After the opening stage UnitedHealthcare are in top spot in the team classification, 10 seconds clear of TIBCO-SVB, with Cycling New Zealand in 8th place.
