The Gravel and Tar Classic is soon to be on our doorstep for 2018 and Team Skoda Racing will be looking to build on their proud history at the race as it makes the step into UCI 1.2 status next year. We talked to Brad Tilby from Team Skoda Racing to talk about the uniqueness of the race and the possibilities for next year.
In two years of racing, the Gravel and Tar Classic has established itself as exactly that; every bit the classic. It does a fantastic job of showcasing some of what makes New Zealand what it is. Make no mistake New Zealand does gravel roads like the best of them, and this event has really put that on the map and in a truly international way; even before it was given UCI status.
In 2017 Alex West took his second, second place finish at the event in his home race, that on paper wouldn’t suit him. We wanted to ask Brad about what it is about Gravel and Tar that sees West perform consistently so well, what it is about the gravel surface itself that is so appealing as well as so challenging and more.
