George Bennett’s crazy busy season is set to continue. Bennett’s Vuelta a Espana return has been confirmed, and he will get set to be lining up for the team that will support the efforts of Steven Kruijswijk in the general classification.
As far as the Kiwi cyclists go the two who are so confirmed for the Vuelta couldn’t be more opposite in their approach. Sam Bewley has lined up with little racing under his belt and indeed none since the RideLondon Classic at the end of July. George Bennett on the other hand has been almost on race overload!
He rode a very strong and aggressive Tour de France, in which he finished seventh in stage 9. He then took on the Clasica San Sebastian and finished a very commendable 15th before heading to Rio for the Olympic Games Road Race. There will be no pressure on George to take a leadership role though for the LottoNL-Jumbo team as he will back up teammate Steven Kruijswijk who suffered the disappointment of losing his overall lead in the Giro d’Italia due to a crash and finishing fourth overall.
Sports Director Addy Engels solidified the fact that the general classification is very much the goal for the team. In a team statement he said, “We have the team built entirely around Steven. A team with men who strongly ride uphill, as well [as] some guys for the flat.”
