George Bennett, as expected, will race the 2019 Vuelta a Espana. However, the Jumbo-Visma squad have opted to side with Primoz Roglic as their GC focus, rather than the Kiwi.
After George Bennett played an outstanding support role for Steven Kruijswijk throughout the Tour de France – resulting in Kruijswijk finishing third overall in Paris – Bennett will reprise his role at what is reputed to be one of the hardest grand tours in recent history.
The eight-man outfit actually includes both Bennett and Kruijswijk in support roles alongside Tony Martin; the only other rider from the Tour de France team who will be starting the 2019 Vuelta also.
Strength in depth is the message being screamed from the Jumbo-Visma side. Kruisjwijk finished fourth at the Vuelta in 2018 but will play a support role, Bennett finished 10th in 2016 but will play a support role, Robert Gesink finished 6th twice in 2009 and 2012 and 7th in 2008 but will play a support role.
Sep Kuss and Neilson Powless and Sep Kuss as well as Lennard Hofstede of the Netherlands complete the side that has to enter the race more confident than ever of not just a grand tour podium potential but a possible overall victory.
