Honouring the suffering
Jul 19th, 12. One thing being on hand at the Tour de France has highlighted to us - there is no such thing as "rolling" over the line, whether it be in the front group or the groupetto.
It is so easy to look at a stage like today's and say, "nothing much happened" ... or "I wish there had been more attacks".
One look at the riders faces when they crossed the finish line, however, and you realise how disrespectful it is to think those thoughts.
For sure, there was a break, someone attacked and won from the break, behind them the dominant team controlled, and behind them ... the rest of the peloton rolled through before the time cut ready for another day ..
But here is what really happened ...
- It was 30+ degrees at the start at 11am - and it got hotter from there.
These are the best of the best of the cycling world and they were suffering today, big time.
