Sep 26th, 09. RoadCycling.co.nz asked kiwi Greg Henderson for his insights into Sunday's UCI World Championship road race.

Can Fabian Cancellara win both World Champion titles? (c)Sirotti
Fabian Cancellara might want the double victory after his win in the time trial, but there are 200 other riders in the race who get to have a say in the final result.

The 262km long route covers 19 laps of a 13.8km circuit with more than 4600 metres of height difference.

As Hayden Roulston told RoadCycling earlier this month, the World's is a different race, with it's own rules etc, it's not a normal race. It's basically a ramp test, with an explosion of some sort with 50kms to go."

On Sunday morning Swiss time, late evening NZ time, New Zealand will be represented at the start line by Roulston, Tim Gudsell and Jeremy Vennell.

Top kiwi cyclist Greg Henderson isn't racing this year, the hills in this course have meant many of the pro peloton pure sprinters have stayed away.

RoadCycling.co.nz asked Henderson for his insights into the race, and for him it comes down to whether it rains or not.  And the forecast at the moment? Rain.

Henderson's insights

Guys to watch. Well I can comment on the guys from the Vuelta and for me Damiano Cunego looks very dangerous. He rode smart in the Vuelta, picked his days and I know he is super motivated for the Worlds.

Alejandro Valverde is obviously in great condition. He will have a great team to support him and what a way to top off the season, but, he just won the Vuelta. I'm sure he has toasted that success a few times, if you know what I mean, so maybe that extra bit of motivation that is needed at this level might not quite be there.

Cancellara. Strength. Check. Power. Check. Fitness. Check. Motivation. Double check. This guy for me is the dark horse. Not expected to win in this hard hilly course? Someone forgot to mention that to him at the Olympics. He nearly won there. I seriously believe he can win in front of his home crowd again.

If it rains, this will change the dynamics of the race completely and then my pick goes to one of my favourite bike riders in the peloton, Kim Kirchen.

Talent just drips off this guy and he said to me if it rain at the Worlds I will win. I don't doubt him.

He says he has an extra 15-20w more power on threshold in the rain. He isn't sure why but he believes it's some allergy thing in dry conditions that isn't present when it is raining.

So that's my elite men predictions? Guesses? Well it's so hard to pick because so many are going well.

I mean I didn't even throw Evans or Gerro [Simon Gerrans] in the mix you know. Or Ballan, or the Ice cream man [Edvald Boasson Hagen]....

And our kiwi chances? Roulston is capable of being on that podium too.

It will be a great race either way and I might even schedule a sneaky day off the bike to park on the couch.
