HendersonPodiumThumbMar 21st, 10. Greg Henderson's hopes of contesting the Milan San Remo sprint were ruined when the Kiwi crashed before the first feed station, injuring his knee.

After two superb early season victories, Henderson was looking forward to testing himself at Milan San Remo where he hoped to conquer the final two climbs, Cipressa and Poggio, in order to contest the final sprint for victory.

"It was something I spoke about with Steven De Jongh and Sean Yates a while back but we never really pursued it. Then, after my strong start to the season, I said to Sean 'why not play two cards?'" Henderson said on TeamSky.com yesterday.

The two cards were Edvald Boasson Hagen to cover breakaways and Henderson for the final kick.  In the end, neither card was played.

Henderson's hopes came crashing down when he crashed behind another rider just before the first feed station.  He now has stitches in his knee which he described as "not good".

"I went straight over the guard rail. I sliced my knee on the metal rail and whacked it hard," he told RoadCycling.co.nz after the race.

Just 10km after his crash, Henderson's position to the rear of the race meant he was caught behind another big crash at the top of Turchino which split the field apart.

"It was a long day chasing," Henderson said of his 7h03m49s race.

Edvald Boasson Hagen finished the race in the same bunch with Henderson, 6m12s behind the winner. The Norwegian suffered stomach cramps towards the end of the race and was unable to keep with the leaders by the top of the Cipressa climb.

RoadCycling.co.nz will follow up with Henderson in a few days when he'll know more about whether this knee injury will affect his future race calendar.
