Surely it is only a question of time before Sam Gaze adds an elite road race or time trial crown to his criterium title won in Takapuna yesterday. The world U23 mountain bike champion took his first elite crit title with a stylish display of aggression at the end of a predictably electric men’s race in Auckland.
He’s got us wondering what he can’t do on a bike. It’s crazy to think that Sam is still just 21 years of age and already a Commonwealth and multiple U23 world MTB champion. In Napier this year it was exciting to see Gaze line up for road race and time trial disciplines along the best our country and produce. He produced a none-to-shabby display there either, placing fourth against the clock behind Regan Gough. At such a young stage in his career Gaze already has a palmares many a seasoned pro would be proud of, but every time we catch up with Gaze he gives the impression of a rider who is just getting started.
Watch out world. If you think you’ve seen the best of Sam Gaze you’ve surely seen nothing yet.
