The provisional startlist has been released for the 2019 Vantage Road National Championships Elite & U23 Men’s road race.  Jason Christie will line up in defence of his title, looking to make it three wins in four years, while James Fouche will also defend his U23 crown.

Is Napier a World Tour rider’s kryptonite?

In 2018 Jason Christie sprinted away to the win in the elite men’s road race after he formed part of a breakaway group of four riders that went to the line.  Christie got the better of Hayden McCormick, who would later that month be crowned New Zealand Cycle Classic winner.  Michael Torckler went from third place in the national championships to 2nd place at the Gravel and Tar Classic later in January and a supporting role for McCormick at the New Zealand Cycle Classic.  4th place went to George Bennett after both he and Torckler had led the attacks on the Napier hills within the group prior to the final sprint for the win.  Both McCormick and Christie would be among the New Zealand team that contested the Commonwealth Games road race on the Gold Coast.

The U23 title in 2018 went to James Fouche who had to similarly call on a big sprint to get the better of Ryan Christensen; with Sam Dobbs completing the podium.

Racing will take place over a shorter course of 166km over the Napier roads, kicking off from Marine Parade, heading out for 82km around the Puketapu/Dartmoor Valley before the Napier Hills circuit that takes in the inner city and finally the finish on Marine Parade.
