Jason Thomason of Blindz Direct has won the 5th round of the Dynamo Team Championship. Thomason had to rely on a sprint finish to overcome Frank Sutton of CrediFlex Pro4mance, with Finn Fisher Black of Team Skoda Racing completing the top 3.
The fifth round of the Dynamo Team Championship took the category 1 field on a 98.6km trek that for much of the first half produced plenty of fast and frantic racing. A number of moves went up the road, but it was a move of four that attacked with 50km covered that proved to be the winning move of the day. In the move were Jason Thomason of Blindz Direct and Frank Sutton of CrediFlex Pro4mance along with Joshua Kench of Team Skoda Racing and Steve Nichols of Tank Guy/Bikebox.
A good gap began to form for the quartet, with the breakaway working effectively together to build a lead of 2.10mins with 66km covered. That appeared to be game over for the peloton unless they could rally and organise a solid chase. While Michael Torckler appeared content to hang back in the bunch – with teammate Thomason up the road – it was left to the other teams to make the chase. After Spoken Coaching’s Alex Heaney attempted to chase over, eventually the race began to really break up.
Action was also taking place in the breakaway, with Kench and Nichols both being dropped with 20km left to race. It was at this point that what looked a pretty comfortable lead for Thomason and Sutton began to be really eaten away. With 13km left to race all but 35 seconds of the pair’s lead had been eaten away. But Thomason and Sutton called on their resilience to keep the peloton at bay, regaining a 45 second lead with 4km left to race and just being able to hold on on the run in to the finish.
With 15 seconds still in hand it was between Thomason and Sutton to decide the fifth round of the series. Sutton came to the finish line with arguably the superior sprint, and with the opportunity to make it two wins from two for CrediFlex Pro4mance after Ryan Christensen’s win in round 4; but Thomason called on his tactical nous to come through and take the win, with Finn Fisher-Black gapping the rest of the chasing pack to take third place. 10 seconds later Steve Lampier of Blindz Direct led home Team Skoda Racing’s Jayden Kuijpers and CrediFlex Pro4mance’s Toby Atkins to take fourth place.
