Sam Bennett has taken the win in stage 3 of Criterium du Dauphiné.  The in-form Irishman who has been the stand out sprinter of 2019, took his seventh win of the season ahead of Wout Van Aert of Jumbo-Visma and Davide Ballerini of Astana.

After a dynamic and unpredictable stage 2, normal service resumed in stage 3 on a rain-swept 177km between Le Puy-en-Velay and Riom.  The stage began with climbing but the majority of the final 50km were flat, with just four category four climbs to contend with – three of them in the space of 20km.

Two riders formed the break of the day that would go on for the majority of the stage.  Natnael Berhane of Cofidis and Quentin Pacher of Vital Concept – B&B Hotels were the protagonists.  They succeeded in building a lead of 3.35mins at the top of the first climb while Bahrain-Merida and Arkea-Samsic took up the pace-setting in a comparatively pedestrian early part of the day’s racing.

With 65km to go the gap was down to 2 minutes and the race looked like it was very much following the script for the sprinters.  Bahrain-Merida, Deceuninck-Quick Step, BORA-Hansgrohe and Team Ineos were all paying close attention to the goings on at the front of the peloton, and they had the break brought back to a lead of just 1 minute with 49km remaining.

The gap to the break held at just below the minute mark with the peloton not wanting to catch the break too soon, but inevitably the gap proceeded to tumble.  The duo held on well but there was never any doubt about the peloton catching them.  With 26km to go the skies cleared and the riders kept on towards the finish while beginning to ditch the rain jackets.

With 20km to go the gap was down to 30 seconds but Berhane and Pacher were on borrowed time now with the duo in full view of the steadily accelerating peloton.  Bahrain-Merida were contesting for position as they defended the lead of Dylan Teuns, with Astana next to them.  After lasting through the intermediate sprint the duo were finally caught with 12.2km to go.  From here Team Ineos showed themselves at the front of the race with Arkéa Samsic on the shoulders of Bahrain-Merida.  BORA-Hansgrohe were also establishing themselves at the front of the race with Shane Archbold leading teammate Sam Bennett near the front of the field.

The gallop towards the line saw Ruben Guerreiro of Katusha-Alpecin come down with 7.4km to go.  CCC Team, Groupama-FDJ, Lotto Soudal and AG2R La Moniale all took turns on the front of the peloton with less than 4km to go; the mixture of GC teams combined with sprint outfits making matters interesting.  Also present towards the front was Dion Smith of Mitchelton-SCOTT, staying about 20 riders back in the middle of the road with 3km to go.

Deceuninck-Quick Step moved forward with 2.6km to go with BORA-Hansgrohe and Shane Archbold holding their ground in the middle of the road, but Katusha-Alpecin made a strong move on the left hand side as Arkéa Samsic also moved forward for Andre Greipel.  Under 1km to go Dimension Data held the lead with Dion Smith close behind but a sudden turn of pace from Shane Archbold with 600m to go saw the Kiwi perfectly line up Sam Bennett for a kick for home.  As Archbold ended his effort Bennett accelerated away and from there it was made to look easy from the Irishman, with Archbold celebrating long before even Bennett was.

Bennett took the win a couple of bike lengths clear of Wout Van Aert with Davide Ballerini third ahead of Clément Venturini of AG2R La Mondiale and Edward Theuns of Trek-Segafredo.

After a perfect lead out from Shane Archbold, the Kiwi cruised home in 20th place, celebrating as he did so.  It is the highest placing for Archbold this season in the World Tour this season so far, and achieved in spite of not even sprinting the after leading out Bennett.  Compatriot Dion Smith of finished safely in the bunch with Adam Yates holding his position in the general classification.
