Team Skoda Racing have confirmed their line up for the second edition of the Gravel and Tar Classic. The team will feature last year’s Gravel and Tar Classic runner-up Alex West in a squad that will look to go just one better this time around in the country’s best multi-surface cycling event.
Last year Alex West rode for AvantiPlus Palmerston North and broke away in the company of Logan Griffin to contest the win; with Griffin marginally getting the better of him. This year West is back but this time racing for Team Skoda Racing, in a squad that is absolutely full of muscle. West is also one of several Team Skoda Racing riders to come to the Gravel & Tar Classic on the back of the recent Elite Road National Championships in Napier. West came 7th in the U23 category in the road race on Sunday while also finishing 5th in the time trial on the Friday.
Joel Yates, winner of the U23 category at the Trust House North Island Series, will line up for the team having finished seventh in the individual time trial in Napier. There will also be Ethan Batt, 12th in the Napier time trial, and Chris Denholm alongside one half of the team ownership in Brad Tilby.
Of the team only Alex West and Joel Yates have previous Gravel and Tar Classic experience, with the pair of them racing in opposing teams last year. Team Skoda Racing’s campaign in last year’s race was a strong one, with Robert Stannard finishing sixth for the team. Although Stannard is expected to be back at the Classic this year he will likely be going up against them as an independent rider.
