The first episode of the RoadCycling Podcast is out now and who better to guest on our first ever episode than newly crowned Tour of Southland winner James Piccoli. The Canadian took the time out to chat about his win, the journey to yellow, the state of New Zealand cycling and more.
As Piccoli enjoys life in Queenstown post-Tour he can do so with a smile on a season well ridden; and capped off in style. After strong performances in the Tour of Utah and Tour of Alberta earlier in the season particularly, the SBS Bank Tour of Southland was the cream on a decent season’s cake for the 26 year old.
The way he and the KIA Motors-Ascot Park Hotel team went about the race was exciting to watch and it’s safe to say that they certainly earned the accolades that came their way. Best team of the race, stage wins for both Piccoli on Bluff Hill and Taylor Gunman as well as a handy handful of podium stage finishes.
One of the most impressive things from our chat with Piccoli was his assertion that after the grand tours the fan support in Southland is just about the best anywhere. The racing was unpredictable, the weather beautiful but it was the incredible wider cycling community that New Zealand possesses that was among the most striking elements of the race for Piccoli.
