Being visible while cycling is one of the most important safety precautions you can take, especially at night.  While having a light on the front and back of a bike is a good start, reflectors are also very valuable.

Although many items of cycling specific clothing include some form of reflective material, things get a little bit more complicated when commuting, where backpacks and items of regular clothing mean reflectors may be in low supply.

Enter Portland Reflector’s series of reflectors, which depending on the model can attach either to the straps of a backpack, or via magnets directly to the backpack itself or even an item of clothing.

The Twilight is a compact triangular reflector which accommodates most backpack or pannier straps, allowing you to add reflectivity to the front, side, or back of a backpack. The durable yet flexible plastic construction of the reflector means that it should stand up well to the wear and tear of daily commuting as well, while not obstructing the function of the strap it is attached to.

The star of the show is the Afterglow, which consists of two large triangular reflectors, one white, one yellow. The two contain powerful magnets, which allows the user to position one reflector where needed on a backpack or item of clothing, and use the other to secure it from the inside.

The magnets are powerful enough to hold the reflector very securely, even through the very thick fabric that characterises a good backpack. It will therefore have no problem attaching to a rain jacket or any other item of clothing you might want to turn into safety wear.

Given the ease of attachment and removal, the Afterglow can also be attached to an item of office wear for those who have a short commute to work not requiring a change of clothing afterward, but who still want to have the extra security of additional reflectors.

Of course, the reflectors are good for more than just cycling, as it can be used to add reflectivity to any item of clothing, whether for running or walking, or even to a stroller for those who like to take the kids along on an evening stroll.

Having lost most of the reflective striping from both my favourite backpack and rain jacket over time, the Afterglow saves me having to go out and spend money on replacing what were quite expensive items that are otherwise still perfectly functional, and improves the amount of reflectivity originally included on those products immensely.
