Oh the sweet satisfaction of victory, that is what Patrick Bevin and BMC Racing are able to enjoy after living up to their favourite status in the team time trial of Tirreno-Adriatico. Afterwards we caught up with the Te Awamutu man to reflect on his first ever World Tour win.
Today represented a first for Patrick Bevin, as he lined up for his first team time trial for his new BMC Racing team. The squad have a magnificent reputation when it comes to racing against the clock and they lived up to it once again in Italy, wining in 22.19mins; four seconds clear of Mitchelton-Scott.
Afterwards Patrick revealed to RoadCycling the butterflies that were felt pre-race that were overcome by the satisfaction of victory.
“It was very satisfying to nail that one. Being a discipline that BMC specialise in while being my first one with the team created quite a bit of nerves, especially considering it’s been a year since I have done a TTT. It was an amazing feeling to be part of a winning team and yes part of my first World Tour victory,” Patrick told us.
We have to admit that we anticipated a pretty thorough game plan for BMC as they threw their seven riders at the 21.5km course in Lido di Camaiore. But as Patrick explained to us it was much simpler than what might have been perceived. “There is not much to say for the approach to the TTT, we averaged 58kph and it’s simply about keeping the speed as consistent as you can, which is not easy with a crosswind both ways! The team was incredibly well drilled and smooth, so made slotting in so much easier.”
The win today puts Patrick in third position overall, on the same time as teammate and blue jersey wearer Damiano Caruso. Any chance that Patrick’s finishing kick might be unleashed tomorrow in Follonica?
“Not tomorrow, you can’t just jump in and hope for the best in a fully stacked WT sprint field,” Patrick said. “We have Greg Van Avermart here for the two punchier finishes and will still look to overall ambitions with Damiano and Rohan so it will mean slotting into a team roll,” Patrick answered.
