Patrick Bevin is back to the Santos Tour Down Under. The Cannondale-Drapac rider finished tenth overall in the event last year, his first World Tour event of his career with his new team. This year he will likely take a back seat in the company of 2013 winner Tom-Jelte Slagter and last year’s 5th place rider Michael Woods.
After winning the elite men’s time trial at the National Road Championships in Napier, Bevin entered the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under in strong condition. He went on to finish sixth in stage 2 and tenth in the stage to Old Willunga Hill; results that helped him secure 10th place overall and 3rd place in the best young rider classification.
The experience for Bevin was a new one, racing at the highest level in professional cycling. When we spoke to him during the week he explained how it was the ‘hustle’ that was taking a bit of getting used to. “I certainly feel like I am lacking a bit of confidence when the pressure is on at the end of the race, you simply can’t get away with expending any energy that you could possibly avoid,” Bevin told us at the time.
