Deborah Paine has secured a strong top ten finish in the Winston Salem Cycling Classic.  The Cogeas-Mettler Pro Cycling rider crossed the line 8th behind Hagens Berman/Supermint Pro Cycling’s Leigh Ann Ganzar, with Arlenis Sierra of Astana in second and Sho-Air TWENTY20’s Chloe Dygert third.

Eight laps of a just-over-12km course comprised the 2019 Winston Salem Cycling Classic with Deborah Paine lining up for her new Cogeas-Mettler Pro Cycling outfit, looking to build on the form shown at the Amgen Tour of California and Tour of the Gila in what has been a very busy racing month of May.  The 95.56km course is rugged in nature, rolling its way around the streets of Winston Salem in North Carolina.

Around 100 women lined up for the race with Paine joined by compatriots Courteney Lowe of Fast Chance Women’s Cycling p/b The Happy Tooth, Sharlotte Lucas of TIBCO-SVB, Pip Sutton of Specialized Wolfpack p/b Jackroo, Michaela Drummond of DNA Pro Cycling & Olivia Ray of Milligan Elite Women’s Cycling p/b Ortho Carolina.  The race was an aggressive one, with time gaps throughout the top ten, but two riders emerged strongest as the day wore on.

The decisive move in the race unfolded with a group that formed about 15km from the finish.  The move was originally a 10-rider group comprised of Lauren Stephens of TIBCO-SVB, Chloe Dygert and Shayna Powless of Sho-Air TWENTY20, Arlenis Sierra, Leigh Ann Ganzar, Ganzar’s teammate Lily Williams, Deborah Paine and Edwige Pitel of Cogeas-Mettler Pro Cycling, Sara Bergen of Rally UHC and Australian Emily Roper.

Not content to wait for the sprint, Leigh Ann Ganzar launched a solo attack at the start of the final lap that saw only Dygert and Sierra able to respond.  Ganzar had the gap though and quickly built a lead of 30 seconds as the group behind her began to splinter.  Sierra was able to drop Dygert in pursuit of Ganzar, but despite a spirited chase victory belonged to Ganzar who crossed the line 4 seconds ahead of Sierra with Dygert leading home a small chase group for third.

Deborah Paine was the first of the Cogeas riders to cross the line, finishing 8th and a place ahead of teammate Edwige Pitel. A great day in the saddle also saw Paine walk away with the Queen of the Mountains classification.
