Former Tour of Wellington champion Michael Torckler will line up for this year’s New Zealand Cycle Classic in the colours of the New Zealand National Team. Torckler last raced in the all-black colours of the national squad five years ago and adds a further GC dynamic to the team that already boasts a great amount of strength.
To say that Michael Torckler’s 2017-2018 spring-summer campaign has been successful is a massive understatement. His most recent endeavours saw him explode the National Championships road race into life with a well-timed attack that eventually saw him claim the third spot on the podium behind Hayden McCormick and Jason Christie.
But his form even there was far from surprising given his consistency at the Dynamo Team Championship which sees him hold an eight point lead over James Oram; with whom he will team up for the Cycle Classic. Torckler also won the stage to Coronet Peak in the SBS Bank Tour of Southland, wore the yellow jersey and eventually took third overall.
Torckler will join a team full of strength and it’s the partnership that could develop between James Oram, Hayden McCormick and Taylor Gunman that will be of primary interest to us when the roads go up. The stage to Admiral Hill will be of particular interest.
