After taking a nail-biting overall win in the Giro d’Italia with Tom Dumoulin, Team Sunweb is sending a team built around sprinter Michael Matthews to the Tour de France, with a focus on stage wins.
Matthews will have the unenviable task of trying to challenge Peter Sagan’s dominance in the green jersey competition, as well as try to get the better of the fast men to claim a bunch gallop for Sunweb. He did claim a stage win in the 2016 Tour, riding for Orica-GreenEdge, so there is no questioning his pedigree, and his new team has shown confidence in him by selecting a strong team of lead-out riders and workers including Nikias Arndt, Albert Timmer, Mike Teunissen, Roy Curvers, and Ramon Sinkeldam.
The team also includes some strong climbers, in the form of Laurens Ten Dam, Warrren Barguil, and Simon Geschke, who can be expected to challenge on the more hilly terrain, especially if they can infiltrate breakaways. Ten Dam has finished in the top ten of the Tour de France before, but is unlikely to be going into the race with aspirations of threatening the contenders in the overall classification.
Barguil has recorded some excellent results over the last couple of years, with a podium finish in the Tour de Suisse overall classification in 2016 to his name, as well as eighth place in Paris-Nice this year, so he could potentially show on the overall classification if he gets in the right moves. However, he will be lacking the dedicated support that the serious contenders for the overall classification will have, and the team has stated that stage wins will take priority over a high placing in the overall classification for their riders.
