World Cup track medallist and Avanti IsoWhey Sports rider Luke Mudgway has won the Rotorua-Taupo Flyer in a tense battle that saw him edge out teammate Regan Gough and Sam Dobbs after a five-man move escaped during the 100km race.

This year’s elite race saw 30 men and women take on the 100km race from Rotorua as they made their way to Taupo, with a very strong field including New Zealand Olympic prospects Luke Mudgway, Nick Kergozou and Regan Gough, BMC Development Team’s Sam Dobbs, Team Skoda Racing’s Matthew Markby and Nick Bain, runner-up in the final round of the Dynamo Events Team Championship Logan Griffin, winner of the opening round of the same series Frank Sutton, and Commonwealth Game medallist Gordon McCauley.

A group of five riders broke away during the race and succeeded in establishing a near six minute advantage by the race’s end.  In the move were madison track teammates Luke Mudgway and Regan Gough, Nick Bain of Team Skoda Racing, Logan Griffin and Sam Dobbs.  Behind them a chase group had formed that featured Bain’s teammate Matthew Markby, Rotorua Racing’s Jared Johnston, Frank Sutton, Mike Annnand and Gordon McCauley.

But it would be the five riders that would go ahead and contest the fin, with Griffin and Bain dropping off a little in the run in to the finale leaving a three-way sprint for the win between Dobbs, Gough and Mudgway.  Mudgway had the better of his companions though as the bronze medallist in the points race at the Hong Kong World Cup in January took the win ahead of Gough and Dobbs.

Griffin arrived home ahead of Nick Bain with the two of them completing the top five.  In the sprint for sixth Matthew Markby edged out Gordon McCauley with Frank Sutton, Jared Johnston and Mike Annand rounding out the top ten.

Natalie Kerwin was a dominant force in the women’s race.  Breaking away with elite men’s rider Ben Earnshaw, Kerwin put ten minutes into her closest rival Jessica Gosling who finished second ahead of Tessa Jenkins.
