Elite road national champion Joseph Cooper of IsoWhey Sports SwissWellness has won stage 3 of Tour of China I. Cooper took the win ahead of Siarhei Papok of Minsk Cycling Club and Liam Bertazzo of Willier Triestina – Selle Italia.
Heading into stage 3 of Tour of China I the IsoWhey Sports SwissWellness team had already taken a step onto the podium and were looking to build on that. Cameron Bayly had taken third place in stage 2 from Xiyang to Yunzhuhu, moving himself up to 7th overall. Heading into stage 3 of the race Joseph Cooper sat in 17th place overall, 28 seconds adrift of race leader Liam Bertazzo.
Stage 3 would take the field on a 140.6km trek starting and finishing in Pingchang, and taking in three categorised climbs en route to the finish. Despite the difficulty of the finish a peloton was expected to arrive at the finish line together, until Joseph Cooper decided not to wait around for a bunch sprint.
With 1.5km remaining Cooper made a strong attack and timed his effort perfectly to cross the finish line 5 seconds ahead of his nearest rivals led home by Siarhei Papok.
