Earlier this year it was announced that Lotto Soudal sprint star Andre Greipel would not be racing the Santos Tour Down Under; a race that has become something of a tradition for the German in recent years.  The partnership between Greg Henderson and Andre Greipel has been extremely productive in the last few seasons, with Greipel able to credit a great many of his wins to Henderson and the lead out train’s ability to position him just perfectly towards the finish.  Since 2008 Greipel has won 16 stages of the Santos Tour Down Under; putting him head and shoulders above anybody else as the rider to have won the most stages in the race’s history.

This year though with the absence of ‘the gorilla’ who has chosen to ride a different programme in the run up to his big goals for the season, the team have opted to play a couple of different cards; although Henderson’s inclusion in the team – after injury forced him out last year – will provide a much needed experience factor.

Greg has raced in the Santos Tour Down Under no less than six times since 2008 – missing only last year’s race – while experience will also be provided in the form of teammate and defending king of the mountains champion, Australian Adam Hansen.  Between them their 12 years of collective experience in the Adelaide race will prove essential for Lotto Soudal.  The team is also supported by the arrival of Thomas De Gendt from Omega Pharma-Quick Step who will be racing his fifth Santos Tour Down Under.

Sport director Herman Frison said in a team statement, “We are aiming for a good overall general classification with any number of our riders, as all have the ability to make an impact on the race.”
