Hayden McCormick is back in New Zealand and enjoying a more laid back approach to the summer. Yes, he will be racing at the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge on Saturday, but no it will not be on the road. We caught up with him to discuss the season gone, being back and the summer ahead.
Being part of a very strong ONE Pro Cycling team, there were a number of highlights to pick from over a fantastic year of racing. After winning the U23 national time trial in Napier, which got the ball rolling for victories in the team. In all the team boasted 13 UCI victories to their name – including national titles – but it was a dominant display in the French Tro Bro Leon race by the team; that saw the team take first and second in the race courtesy of Martin Mortensen and Peter Williams, with McCormick and teammate Dion Smith playing crucial roles in the win.
Since the world championships in Doha, and the following Abu Dhabi Tour, McCormick has returned home and enjoyed life on the bike but off the road. Mountain biking has taken a little of his time, and he’s only just now getting back onto life on the tarmac. We got to catch up with him on the day of his first training ride back on the road bike. The (ever so slightly windy) result is above. Enjoy!
