Orica-SCOTT prepare for their team time trial at the Giro Rosa, photo Rose Manley

Georgia Williams and her Orica-SCOTT team have finished third in the opening team time trial of the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile; or Giro Rosa.  Boels Doelmans raced away with the win over the short course ahead of Team Sunweb, with Orica-SCOTT just wrestling the final podium place from Wiggle High5 on the opening day.

The first stage of the Giro Rosa took the field on an 11.5km team time trial from Aquileia to Grado.  The course was pancake flat but still saw some big time gaps emerge between the 24 different teams present for the race.  Boels Dolmans were inevitably going to be a force to be reckoned with and they showed why as they blitzed the opening time trial of the race.  The world team time trial champions stopped the clock in a time of 14.47mins, with Canadian Karol-Ann Canuel crossing the line first to take the leader’s jersey of the race.

In second place came Team Sunweb at 16 seconds adrift of their rival Dutch-based team.  Sitting in third place though came the Australian Orica-SCOTT outfit; which featured New Zealander Georgia Williams.  Williams has been joined at the Giro Rosa by Annemiek van Vleuten, Amanda Spratt, Katrin Garfoot, Sarah Roy, Alexandra Manly and Jenelle Crooks.  Together the team of seven crossed the line in 15.09mins, an average speed of 45.545kph, and just 2 seconds faster than Wiggle High5. and 14 seconds faster than Canyon SRAM Racing who completed the top five.

The team time trial also marked the return to racing of Linda Villumsen.  Villumsen took to the start line with Team VéloCONCEPT Women teammates Claudia Koster, Pernille Mathiesen, Louise Norman Hansen, Camilla Møllebro, Sara Penton and Christina Siggaard.  The team placed 11th on the stage, with positions 9-11 separated by just 4 seconds.
