Stage 2 (184km) of the UAE Tour — it was windy, really windy. Same thing happened last year when we came off the port and split, but it wasn’t 100k to go. So, while it was very, very hard for an hour there as it split, I was in the second group with 25 guys up the front. Very unlikely that anything is going to roll all the way to the finish.
You kind of just wait for it to sit up and come back. It kind of takes the sting out of the race. It was interesting for that. Then we go back to cruise mode and throw it all in the bucket for that last finish. I was trying to look after ‘Cuba (Jakub Mareczko) in the sprint, but just couldn’t get clear air.
We were in a good position in the wash there, but as it played out the road just gets narrower, and narrow and narrower, and by the time you have lead-out guys coming left and right, you’ve got nowhere to go.
I think he might have snuck into the top 10, but obviously we wanted a little more than that. So, we look at tomorrow — Jebel Hafeet (179km) — a 10km climb.
Really, a bit of a lottery.
I think some of the guys coming out of Europe, myself coming back from injury, don’t really know how we are going to go. We are going to try to line it up and try to keep a guy in the mix and then look at Hatta Dam the following day, which for me is kind of the stage I’ve had my eye on.
