Daniel Busbridge – broken ribs, broken jaw . . . race win

Daniel Busbridge of Rotorua Racing made the sprint look easy as he took the category 2 win at the 5th round of the Dynamo Team Championship in Tokoroa.  Little did we know the injuries he was nursing as he got the job done!

It’s one of those classic cycling memes that you’ve doubtless seen on social media, ‘cyclist crashes . . . pretends he is ok’.  Well Daniel Busbridge was the embodiment of that.  To look at him you’d have no idea that anything had gone wrong, but just a week ago he was victim of a car crash that saw him forced to resort to racing on a borrowed bike at the South Waikato District Council Forrest Classic.

Busbridge played a tactically smart game, conserving his energy in the early stages while a series of attacks came and went around him.  He knew that when Aaron Strong launched his big move on the long climb of the day to go with him would be a futile exercise, so Busbridge bided his time and launched along with two other riders in pursuit of Strong with less than 10km to go.

When the catch was made it was then about saving himself for the finish, which Busbridge did successfully.  A great day out especially given the injuries sustained.  We hope that it’s the start of bigger and better things to come.
