Georgia Danford has finished 6th for the Velo Project Women’s Cycling Team at their first UCI outing in China. Danford sprinted to a fine top ten result at Tour of Zhoushan Island I behind Thi Thât Nguyen of Vietnam with Elyse Fraser finishing just outside the top ten in a strong start for the Kiwi team.
The Tour of Zhoushan Island I saw 15 teams featuring riders from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Sweden, Vietnam, the UK, Indonesia, New Zealand, the USA, Slovakia, Iran, the Philippines, Italy and Colombia line up for the 85.35km race. The 85.35km race saw New Zealanders Danford, Fraser, Kirsty McCallum and Annamarie Lipp line up for the race amongst the 75 starters.
In the end the race came down to a bunch sprint with Thi Thât Nguyen taking the win ahead of the Italian duo of Arianna Fidanza and Lisa Morzenti of Eurotarget-Bianchi-Vittoria. In the sprint for the line Nguyen and Fidanza finished 1 second ahead of the rest of the field, with Georgia Danford and Elyse Fraser in the mix in the dash for the line. Danford crossed the line sixth with Fraser in 12th place. Kirsty McCallum finished 23rd and with the same time as her teammates.
