Gianluca Brambilla of Etixx-Quick Step took a solo win in stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia in a stage that shook the general classification and wrestled the pink leader’s jersey from GIANT-Alpecin’s Tom Dumoulin who surprisingly dropped out of the top ten overall.

Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia was going to be an interesting one for the field as they took on the 186km stage from Foligno to Arezzo.  The stage was distinctive because of its dirt section of racing up the Alpe di Poti.  The climb itself would be 8.6km in length, hitting 14% in places and providing a surprisingly challenging obstacle for the GC contenders.  The other potential problem for riders would be the prospect of punctures out on the road.

A breakaway quickly established itself at the front of the race, but the presence of GIanluca Brambilla in the move meant that there was a little reluctance in the peloton to let the break gain an advantage, with the peloton behind them splitting in the early stages.  It was dangerous news for Tom Dumoulin as he looked to conserve his overall lead, and he found himself in one of the groups further down for a brief period until the break were finally released and the peloton came back together again.

The breakaway also included Alessandro De Marchi of BMC Racing, Matteo Trentin of Etixx-Quick Step, Alexey Tsatevich of Katusha, Blel Kadri of AG2R La Mondiale, Nikias Arndt of GIANT-Alpecin, Jaco Venter of Dimension Data, Giacomo Berlato of Nippo-Vini Fantini, Sean De Bie of Lotto Soudal and the Movistar duo of Jasha Sütterlin and Jose Joaquin Rojas.  Brambilla had to be considered as one of the potential favourites for the stage as a rider who had taken third place in Strade Bianche earlier in the season.

The break would gain some five minutes in all with the peloton in tow, and went through the finish line to begin the final 31.6km with an advantage of 4 minutes remaining over the peloton.  Predictably the breakaway fragmented on the slopes of Alpe di Poti with Brambilla launching a stinging attack on the dirt section; that no one could respond to.  The Italian charged away on his own and crested the summit of the climb with a 2.37mins advantage over the nearest chase group; but just 24 seconds over AG2R La Mondiale’s Matteo Montaguti, another member of the breakaway.

It’s half true to say that the battle for pink was unfolding behind Brambilla; but it may be more accurate to say that the battle was being waged throughout the field.  At the front Brambilla was gaining time to potentially wrestle pink from a fading Tom Dumoulin; and it is Dumoulin cracking on the climb that raised the most eyebrows.  The pink jersey group was initially a very strong and rather substantial one with Dumoulin sitting in the group and looking ok.  But the first of several attacks from Alejandro Valverde soon revealed that all was not alright for Dumoulin.  The Spaniard for Movistar jumped clear, drawing with him Vincenzo Nibali of Astana, Esteban Chaves of Orica GreenEDGE and eventually Rigoberto Uran of Cannondale and Steven Kruijswijk of LottoNL-Jumbo.

Dumoulin was unable to continue following the GC challengers and he dropped back somewhat spectacularly to trail the Valverde group by more than a minute by the time he crested the top of the Alpe di Poti.  As the pink jersey descended in pursuit of the Valverde and Nibali group he had a 1.03min deficit to try and make up on the group.  That group was not having things all their own way either, with not all the riders working to build a lead over the maglia rosa.  Alejandro Valverde and his Movistar artillery in the form of Andre Amador put in a big amount of work.

Valverde seemed particularly suited to the descents, with Vincenzo Nibali – a very noted descender – pushing the pace with Chaves in tow.  That pace was starting to break up the group, while the leaders in the group tried to dodge the race motorbikes who were getting a bit too close to the action.

Up ahead though Brambilla was making the most of the road that he had to himself.  He had a good lead over Matteo Montaguti, 2.37mins to the Valverde group and 3.17mins to Dumoulin with 6km remaining.  It was simply proving not to be Dumoulin’s day behind the rest as he continued to lose time on the descent.

As it stood, Gianluca Brambilla was about to step into the maglia rosa, having started the day 1.56mins behind Dumoulin.  Montaguti hadn’t completely lost the stage with 33 seconds being the deficit to the stage leader.  Meanwhile the Valverde group was breaking down in arguments with a number of riders opting to simply sit on the wheels and conserve energy in the run up to the individual time trial tomorrow.

Into the centre of Arezzo, Brambilla was greeted by a wall of noise as the Italian fans came to welcome the second Italian stage winner of this year’s Giro d’Italia.  With 1km Brambilla had 2 minutes in hand on the Valverde group and 3.08mins over Dumoulin as the road went up one last time.  The road would take on a technical and twisting final few hundred metres but for Brambilla it was virtually a celebration parade as he lifted his hands in the air and enjoyed the moment as he took the stage; and potentially pink.

Montaguti held on for second place at 1.06mins, while Moreno Moser completed an all Italian top 3 at 1.27mins.  Then the chasing group arrived with Alejandro Valverde leading home the group that contained Steven Kruijswijk, Mikel Landa, Esteban Chaves and Ilnur Zakarin of Katusha just gaining a few more seconds on Vincenzo Nibali and Rigoberto Uran in the sprint.  Finally though Tom Dumoulin crossed the line 2.51mins down and out of pink.  Orica GreenEDGE’s Sam Bewley arrived home in a large group that featured Andre Greipel, Fabian Cancellara, Arnaud Demare, Giacomo Nizzolo and Caleb Ewan.  He can be pleased with the work that Esteban Chaves did to now sit sixth overall.

The result on the day means that on the eve of the first individual time trial Brambilla holds a 23 second lead over Ilnur Zakarin, with Steven Kruijswijk third at 33 seconds and Valverde 4th at 36 seconds. Tom Dumoulin lost pink and his place in the top ten as he dropped to 11th.  He will have 1.05mins to make up if he is to reclaim pink tomorrow in the individual time trial; his speciality.
