Sam Bewley takes to the start line for the first time since June when he lines up for Mitchelton-SCOTT at the Tour de Pologne. The Kiwi will join a team that stars the likes of Mikel Nieve and Luka Mezgec as he looks to build towards the Vuelta a Espana towards the end of the month.
It’s been a long time between drinks for Sam Bewley, but finally after taking the whole of July off from racing, the Kiwi known as ‘Wagon’ is set to return to racing at the Tour de Pologne; the penultimate week-long European World Tour race on the World Tour. Finishing on the 9th August it’s a great opportunity for Vuelta a Espana prospects to hone their form for the race that starts 15 days later.
After three days primarily aimed at the sprinters, stages 4 onwards will see the GC creme come to the fore. Last year George Bennett seriously imposed himself on the race with a consistent display of positive attacking racing. For Mitchelton-SCOTT, last year saw Simon Yates race to victory on the final stage and second overall.
Bewley will be at the race for the first time since the 2017 edition; having missed the 2018 race. Sports Director Gene Bates has recognised the importance for Poland in view of the final grand tour of the race, saying, “It’s a real tune up event for the Vuelta, it’s one of the last stage races we’ll do leading into there so the guys will be thinking about that and using it as motivation.”
