George Bennett and Rigoberto Uran have had the decisions to penalise them 20 seconds for taking drinks in the final 20km of stage 12 reversed. The UCI had initially discarded the appeals launched against the decision to penalise the riders; without penalising Romain Bardet who appeared to do exactly the same thing. However, since then the decision has been overturned.
Stage 12 saw George Bennett cross the line far enough ahead of Nairo Quintana of Movistar to claw his way to just 3 seconds behind the Colombian in the general classification; well and truly knocking on the door of 8th place overall. But having decided that Bennett and Uran had taken drinks inside the final 20km the UCI decided to fine Bennett 200 Euros and penalise him 20 seconds.
Despite the protestations dished out by Cannondale-Drapac and LottoNL-Jumbo it looked certain that Bennett would lose that time. But this evening NZ time it was announced that George’s 20 second time penalty will be cancelled; and the Kiwi can return to the 3 second deficit separating him from 8th overall.
