Jack Bauer will line up for Mitchelton-SCOTT at the 2019 Giro d’Italia starting on 11th May.  Bauer last raced his first and only Giro back in 2012 where he was part of a Garmin Barracuda squad who won the team time trial and then supported Ryder Hesjedal to the overall win.

This time, heading into the Giro d’Italia, it will be the GC campaign of Simon Yates that Bauer will be getting behind.  Last year at the Giro, Mitchelton-SCOTT were sensational as they spent 13 days in the Maglia Rosa and took five stage wins between Esteban Chaves, Simon Yates and Mikel Nieve.  Their pursuit of the overall crown only unravelled on the stage to Bardonecchia where Chris Froome launched his famous long-range solo break that led to him securing what was then the triple crown of Tour-Vuelta-Giro wins.

Sam Bewley was expected to start the Giro this year, but sadly he’s been ruled out of the race due to a crash in reconnaissance of the Tour de Romandie prologue.  While Bewley’s campaign so far this season has been dominated by stage races, Jack Bauer has had a much more eclectic season that’s taken in stage racing at the UAE Tour and Paris-Nice, and a classics campaign that reached its peak when he was very nearly part of the winning move at Gent-Wevelgem; only being caught with about 300m to go.

Bauer’s role in this year’s Giro will primarily be centred around the flatter stages of the race, teaming up with Luke Durbridge and Chris Juul-Jensen to support Simon Yates, while the Brit’s time in the mountains will see Brent Bookwalter, Mikel Nieve, Esteban Chaves and grand tour debutant Lucas Hamilton step up.

As opposed to grand tours in recent years that have really thrown the GC battle into focus early on, the Giro d’Italia will follow a slightly more conventional route, with opportunity for the sprinters early on before the climbers gradually take centre stage.  A few more rolling stages give way to the individual time trial in stage 9, but it is not until stage 13 to Ceresole Reale that the first major summit finish kicks in.
