When Team Skoda Racing were looking for the right insurance provider for their outfit they were looking for a policy that understood cycling and the challenges associated with it. While almost all domestic insurers weren’t able to meet the team’s demands, Apex have stepped up.
As Scott Fairbairn of Team Skoda Racing explained, there were a couple of specific things that his outfit – one of New Zealand’s finest elite units, and arguably the premier men’s development squad in New Zealand – were on the lookout for. “Key things were finding a provider that understood cycling and the insurance challenges it can bring (high value bikes and high value bits on bikes wheels, power meters etc) and who had specialist cover for equipment and riders nationwide and beyond,” Scott told RoadCycling. “Almost all domestic insurers do not really have policies suitable for serious race bikes.”
That’s where Apex come in. The team at Apex were able to provide cover for Team Skoda Racing for training and racing at elite level, as well as provide cover for the team’s bikes, wheelsets and gear for training, racing, and transportation in or on a vehicle anywhere in New Zealand. On top of that there is group discount as cover is provided for the entire team of around a dozen riders. There is a specialist claims service with regard to damage to bikes, repairs and assessment which results in a speedy turnaround.
At the end of the day for Team Skoda Racing it was an easy decision to work with Apex. “We chose them because they tick the boxes,” Scott said. “And they also liked what Team Skoda Racing is doing and is happy to support us – without them the high value Treks and DT Swiss wheels we run would be a big risk to the team and rider.”
So what difference does that make for the way the team operates and functions now? “It has made the difference that the team can hold the ownership of the gear safe in the knowledge that if anything foes wrong we are covered with specialist cover with people that understand cycling. We will not have to explain the issues of repairing carbon, why the bikes had more expensive wheels than specified on the original bike, why a Shimano Power Meter is needed as it’s expensive etc etc. They get cyclists and many of the Apex and Bikesure people ride as well.”
