Criterium National Championship silver medallist, Alex Ray, is in Auckland City Hospital fighting for his life. He has been hit by a car in Auckland this morning and is currently unconscious.
As reported on NZ Herald, Alex Ray was hit by a car at around 6am on the intersection of Morningside Drive and New North Road. The incident has left him in critical condition, and we await the outcome of surgery which will assess the swelling on his brain.
Roman van Uden told NZ Herald that the injuries sustained by Ray are serious. “He is being kept unconscious and has significant facial and shoulder fractures and rib fractures. He is going into surgery at the moment, to monitor his brain swelling.”
Alex Ray’s 2018 got off to a busy start with racing at the National Road Championships, New Zealand Cycle Classic and Herald Sun Tour coming off the back of the good end to 2017 he experience with a silver medal at the National Criterium Championships. In 2018 he is supposed to be racing with Continental outfit Team McDonalds Down Under alongside compatriot Nick Miller, but right now attention simply turns to the fight for his life.
Our prayers and best wishes for a full recovery go to Alex and we hope to see him back on the bike in New Zealand and around the world soon.
