Blog: 40 year old tour virgin
Oct 25th, 11. BLOG: T minus 5 days. Peter Murphy is a 40 year old virgin - a PowerNet Tour of Southland virgin that is.
Proving age and weight are no barrier, this Gisborne rider - who topped the scales at 140kg just three years ago - can't wait to tackle the Southland roads.
This is the first of many blogs he will share with RoadCycling.co.nz throughout the tour which starts on Sunday.
If you want to read more about his story ... A hefty tale too good not to share
Blog 1 - T minus 5 days
Sitting here at my day job, at "T – Minus 5 days" ticking off the check list of things done and things to do.
It is a big trip from Gisborne to Invercargill, especially for someone nearly 41 years old and who only got back in to road cycling 2.5 years ago.
The bike is packed, the wheels are shipped, the race supplies are ordered and on their way, the training has been done and coach tells me I am not going to get any fitter in the next five days, so it is time to refresh.
The last intensity session is tonight's Gisborne Cycle Club handicap race, a fast and flat 38km loop where the scratchies typically average 44+ km hour. The boys have gathered around and there will be a full complement of six on the start line to make life easier tonight, yeah right!
Coach Sheldrake keeps telling me you have done the training and all the other riders have two arms and legs and a head, just like you. The thing he does not say is they are all half your age and probably weigh in at 2/3rds your weight!
I look at the Team Radio Sport "roster" and the achievements of the young guys in the team and think about what I bring to the mix. Age? Certainly. Power? Definitely. The ability to get over hills,? Yup, never had to push a bike up one yet!
Give me cross winds, rain, hail, sleet all at the same time, all one after the other, twice a day, no problem. The wetter, windier, colder the better.
All topped off with a never say die attitude.
I look at the rest of the start list, the international stars, some of whom I rode with in Wellington this year, and think what a real privilege it is that the race organisers present an opportunity such as this to race with them.
The Team Radio Sport "Management" have been fantastic and a big thanks to Nicola McAra and the team. Everything looks to be ready waiting for the team to arrive.
