Blog: 40 year old tour virgin achieves his goal
Nov 7th, 11. BLOG: Final words on his first PowerNet Tour of Southland by Peter Murphy, the tour's 40 year old virgin.
114 riders began the week long 774km tour last Sunday - Murphy was one of many tour rookies.
On Saturday afternoon, he finished 65th of the 84 riders who made it to the final finish line in Invercargill. His tour was 1h20m longer than that of winner, 19 year old Josh Atkins.
Given Murphy weighed in at 140kg just three years ago and will celebrate his 41st birthday in a few months - his result is inspirational.
Thanks to Pete for being a good sport with the '40 year old virgin' label and for blogging and sharing his SRM data throughout the week.
Blog: A loss for words
By Peter Murphy
It's the Monday after the Saturday that was the final stage of the 2011 Powernet Tour of Southland. I have managed a couple of recovery rides on Dunedin and look forward to flying out to Gisborne this arvo.
I was even talking to Justin [Stott, teammate] today about next year's tour!
The Southland hospitality was just the best! The racing fantastic and public so accommodating to our cause.
If I have not said it enough already, Jan McAra, Tony McAra, Nic McAra, Barry "The bum doctor" or was that "rum doctor", Shaye and Amy have really laid it all on for the team. Share and Amy kept us moving over the week with massage, even heading to Te Anau with the team in the middle of exams.
Saturday was tough. The canceling of the ITT was a downer but definitely a good call. The last stage into Invercargill was a tough one. 295 average watts told me it was! My legs told me with 3km to go they had done enough.
I look at Gordy [Gordon McCauley] who has done 19 tours and just can't wait to have him in M2 next year (not!). If I do what he's done it means I will be still racing at 60! Nah.
Sarah from RoadCycling.co.nz has been great, I always had to have a smile on as the camera was every where. Support this site as they support us without a doubt.
