Prize money of the 2012 Tour de France

thumb_TdF2011LogoJul 6th, 12. The Tour de France is all about glory, honour and a few prized coloured jerseys - but there is also over €2m of prize money at stake.

 

Tour de France 2012 prize money

The winner of the 2012 Tour de France will earn at least €450,000, with additional Euros gained for number of days in the yellow or other jerseys, stage wins, KOM and interim sprint wins.

 

Overall GC placing €1,002,000

 As well as the champion, the runner-ups are also rewarded with a hefty prize purse -  €200,000 for 2nd and €100,000 for the 3rd placed rider.

 

In fact, prize money is awarded to every finisher  - 4th €70,000, 5th €50,000, 6th €23,000 7th €11,500 and a sliding scale ... 19th rider €1,000 ... 30th €600 ... 50th €500 and every other rider who completes the Tour de France earns €400.

 

In addition, every day a rider is in the yellow jersey they earn €350.

 

Stage placings €472,500

  • Fast finishers on the mountains, flats and time trials are well rewarded - 1st €8,000, 2nd €4,000, 3rd €2,000, 4th €1,200 and continues on a sliding scale down to the last earning place - 20th €200 regardless of the type of stage.

 

Points €125,000

  • Intermediate sprint placings - 1st €1,500, 2nd €1,000, 3rd €500
  • Day in green - €300
  • Overall - 1st €25,000, 2nd €15,000, 3rd €10,000, 4th €4,000 with prizes down to 8th place €2,000

 

Young riders €66,500

  • First Young rider each stage - €500
  • Day in Young Rider's jersey - €300
  • Overall winner- 1st €20,000, 2nd €15,000, 3rd €10,000, 4th €5,000

 

Climbers - €107,100

  • Each KOM Hors category (6 this year) - 1st €800, 2nd €450, 3rd €300
  • Each KOM Cat 1 (11 this year) - 1st €650, 2nd €400, 3rd €150
  • Each KOM Cat 2  (8 this year) - 1st €500, 2nd €250
  • Each KOM Cat 3 (11 this year) - 1st €300
  • Each KOM Cat 4 (23 this year) - 1st €200
  • Day in KOM - €300
  • Overall - 1st €25,000, 2nd €15,000, 3rd €10,000, 4th €4,000 with prizes down to 8th place €2,000

 

Most combative  €54,000

  • Each day except TT and final day €2,000
  • Super combative - overall €20,000

 

Teams €178,800 prizes  + €1,391,000 

  • Best team - €2,800 per stage
  • Overall - 1st €50,000, 2nd €30,000, 3rd €20,000, 4th €12,000 and 5th €8,000
  • Each team is provided with €51,423 to cover participation costs
  • Each team that finishes with 7 or more riders received an additional €1,600

 

Additional prizes  €10,000

  • Souvenir Henri Desgrange - first to the top of the col de la Croix de Fer €5,000
  • Souvenir Jacques Goddet - first to the top of the col du Tourmalet €5,000

 

Whether the prize money goes to the team or the rider is up to the team to decide.
