Team USA named for the 2012 Road Worlds
Sep 1st, 12. USA Cycling has announced its large team to content the UCI Road World Championships in Limburg, Netherlands from September 16 to 23.
The five men who donned the red, white and blue in the Olympic Games will do so again as automatic nominations to contest the elite men's race.
The United States earned nine spots in the elite men's road race, the maximum number for any country.
Among the nine Americans to contest the race are the five Olympians: Timmy Duggan, Tyler Farrar, Chris Horner, Taylor Phinney and Tejay van Garderen.
Those five will be joined by discretionary selections Brent Bookwalter, Matthew Busche, Lucas Euser and Alex Howes.
Phinney and van Garderen are will contest the time trial.
The U23 men representing the U.S. will be automatic selections Robert Bush, Joe Dombrowski and Larry Warbasse. Competing alongside them will be discretionary choices Ian Boswell, Gavin Mannion and Nate Brown.
Warbasse and Brown will also contest the time trial.
Bush earned his automatic nomination after winning the U23 road race at the 2012 USA National Championships. Dombrowski, who recently won the Best Young Rider at the 2012 USA Pro Challenge in Colorado, earned his automatic nomination after becoming the first American to win the Giro Ciclistico d'Italia. Warbasse earned an automatic nomination when he placed fifth in the Ronde de L'Isard in France in May.
The United States has qualified the maximum seven riders in the elite women's road race.
Shelley Olds, Amber Neben, Evelyn Stevens, Megan Guarnier, Kristin McGrath, Carmen Small and Andrea Dvorak will comprise the team racing for a rainbow jersey.
As members of the 2012 Olympic Team, Olds, Neben, and Stevens earned automatic nominations to the team. Additionally, Guarnier earned an automatic nomination as the elite women's road national champion as well as being in the top 25 of the UCI rankings. McGrath also earned an automatic nomination to the team after finishing in the top three of the general classification of the Route de France.
Small, who will top the final 2012 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) women's standings, won the Citta di Padova in Italy and placed third in the elite women's road race at the 2012 USA National Championships. Dvorak won the eighth stage of the Route de France and has produced several strong results throughout the 2012 season.
Neben, who won the world championship in the time trial in 2008 and placed seventh in the event at the 2012 Olympic Games will be one of three Americans contesting the individual time trial in the Netherlands. Joining Neben will be discretionary selections Stevens and Small.
