One week ago Gudsell lined up at the start line of the UCI World Championship road race with his spirits high. Despite a rotten season that began with a shoulder and elbow injury after a crash at the first pro tour race of the season, the Tour Down Under, and continued with a recurring nerve issue in his leg, Gudsell was finally feeling good again. He had competed in and completed the three week Spanish Grand Tour, Vuelta a Espana, with his team Francais des Jeux and he had his confidence back. After only six recovery days between the Vuelta and the Worlds, Gudsell was at the start line looking forward to performing well in the black and white New Zealand jersey. "A buzzing atmosphere, very high tension in the peloton, a relentless and super tough course, race on," Gudsell said about his feeling during the opening kilometres.
Then disaster struck, although Gudsell didn't know the extent of it at the time.
