Season wipe out - another cast for Tim Gudsell

gudsell75thumb Oct 06th, 09. Eight months after starting his European season with his arm in a plaster cast, kiwi Tim Gudsell prepares to return to NZ - with his arm in a plaster cast.

"It's pretty straight forward, broken elbow, season over, let's hope 2010 will be better," Gudsell told RoadCycling.co.nz

One week ago Gudsell lined up at the start line of the UCI World Championship road race with his spirits high.

Despite a rotten season that began with a shoulder and elbow injury after a crash at the first pro tour race of the season, the Tour Down Under, and continued with a recurring nerve issue in his leg, Gudsell was finally feeling good again.

He had competed in and completed the three week Spanish Grand Tour, Vuelta a Espana, with his team Francais des Jeux and he had his confidence back.

After only six recovery days between the Vuelta and the Worlds, Gudsell was at the start line looking forward to performing well in the black and white New Zealand jersey.

"A buzzing atmosphere, very high tension in the peloton, a relentless and super tough course, race on," Gudsell said about his feeling during the opening kilometres.

Then disaster struck, although Gudsell didn't know the extent of it at the time.

At the feed-station an unknown rider crashed into the kiwi and once again he found himself picking his bike and his body up off the road.  Gudsell got back on the bike and chased hard for two laps but couldn't recover back to the peloton.  Race over.

Gudsell says he was annoyed at the crash but felt good and was looking forward to a couple more races before the season's end, but when three days had passed and his elbow was still sore he decided he needed a checkup.

He walked out of the medical clinic with his arm in a cast, a broken elbow.

"Still in disbelief days later, as I prepare to return home with my arm in plaster, just like I arrived 8 months ago."
