Linda Villumsen proud to be an Olympic Kiwi
Jun 26th, 12. There is only one Kiwi representative racing the road cycling events at the Olympic Games and Linda Villumsen could not be prouder that it is her.
When she was 23 years old, Villumsen represented Denmark at the Beijing Olympics, fast forward four years and she is now a New Zealand citizen and about to become a Kiwi Olympian.
"I am really happy, and extremely proud to be representing New Zealand again," she told RoadCycling.co.nz after today's Olympic team announcement.
Since becoming a New Zealand citizen in late 2009, Villumsen has raced two World Championships and the Commonwealth Games with the silver fern on her back.
All three times she has earned a medal, but she does not yet have an Olympic medal.
In Beijing she was 5th in the road race and 13th in the time trial - this time she wants to be on the podium with a medal around her neck.
"Olympics is like a dream, the second one is unbelievable, a bit like saying it was maybe not an accident that I went the first time, but at least this time I feel more ready, and more happy and lots more proud," she said.
2012 has been a mixed year for Villumsen with illness affecting the first half of her season with pro-team GreenEdge, but her results in the last few months have been fantastic on the road and on the time trial bike.
She has won two time trials, had a 1st and 2nd in road stages, podiumed in two top level one day races and she took overall victory in the Giro del Trentino earlier this month.
At the moment she is in the mountains of Italy, "working on getting the strongest I can".
Although she has not yet had an opportunity to ride the Olympic courses, she hopes to soon and promises to report back and share her thoughts with Roadcycling.co.nz.
Villumsen will ride the road race in London on July 29th and the time trial on August 1st.
