Stage 5 Update

"The conditions were miserable but the boys all fronted well and had a really solid day," Team Manager in China Graeme Miller said.  "All the Subway Avanti riders seem to be finding their altitude legs at a race which is much harder than any of us expected."

Miller said there were many "glum faces" on the start line and that the race started at the "usual fast pace, even in the wet, cold and windy conditions"

"With the stage being 120km and mainly flat, the wind was always going to be the enemy, all be it light compared to New Zealand standards. Every time the road twisted to meet the side wind the rubber band stretched and broke on some riders," he said.

The King of the Mountain climb with 25km to go split the field into three groups with all the Subway - Avanti riders making the split. With 15km to go the field was coming back together when a crash at the front of the peloton resulted in it splitting into two again.

The Subway – Avanti riders missed the front group of 28 which contested the sprint finish. James Williamson continued his improvement as he adjusts to racing at extreme altitude, finishing highest in the team crossing the line in 42nd place, 53 seconds behind Yuriy Metlushenko's (Amore & Vita-Conad) winning time of two hours, 52 seconds.

Team mates Ian Smallman, Eric Drower, Joe Cooper came in 12 seconds behind Williamson with Sam Horgan following eight seconds behind the trio.

Stage 4 Update

Former New Zealand representative rower Ian Smallman was the best placed of the Subway Avanti riders after another challenging day in the high mountains.

"I was a good result from Ian who had come to the tour from the middle of a New Zealand winter with no recent racing in his legs," Team Manager in China Graeme Miller said.

"It just shows the potential he has, and his years doing the hard yards as a New Zealand ranked rower definitely means he knows how to suffer."

Team mates Joe Cooper and Eric Drower also finished in the main bunch with Smallman, with Sam Horgan four minutes further back and then James Williamson two minutes behind Horgan.

"After getting used to the altitude the boys are improving with each stage," Miller said.

Stage 3 Update

Joe Cooper and Eric Drower were part of an early break before eventually finishing 19min behind Iranian strongman Ghader Mizbani of the Tabriz Petrochemical team.

It's fair to say the boys have had a few challenges, but are settling in now and today was a really good, solid day out that is building some confidence for the days ahead," Team Manager in China Graeme Miller said.

Stage 2 Update

Team Co-owner Hayden Godfrey said the tour was throwing up its fair share of challenges. Both Ryan Wills and Nick Lovegrove had food poisoning and all riders are suffering from the high altitude.

"James appears to have had some intestinal problems as it is easy to have in China," Godfrey said after Stage 2. "The first stage had very wet and dirty conditions which probably didn't help with a number of riders getting sick from most teams. It's all part of the adventure and hopefully James will bounce back a little later in the event."
