Waikato gears up for winter racing
Jun 28th, 12. It's not just the Tour de France cyclists are gearing up for this winter – the 8th annual Winter Fun Rides series in the Waikato is now less than two months away.
Held over three weekends in August, the 2012 series, organized by Dynamo Events brings new courses and extra challenges for competitors.
Starting in Matamata (12th August), then Cambridge (19th August) and finally Hamilton (26th August), the rides are suitable for both recreational cyclists as well as age group competitors.
Event Director Stephen Cox says the Winter Fun Rides have become a permanent fixture in the Waikato cycling calendar.
"This is an event that anyone can do," Cox said. "Last year we had 200-300 competitors take part in each of these events which made for a great atmosphere, but we're hoping for a few more this year."
This year the team at Dynamo have also adjusted the courses accordingly and believe riders will benefit from the changes.
"By organising three different locations over three consecutive weeks, it allows for riders to choose one, two or all three events that suit their diary and budget," Cox says.
Cyclist Jo Bromley says the Winter Fun Rides series has helped her stay fit and focused over the winter.
"It's a fantastic goal to help get you off the couch and onto your bike during the winter months. For the average rider, aiming to complete all three Winter Fun Rides is a great objective and to complete these to the best of your ability, amongst friends or even beat the clock from the previous year has provided me with the motivation to stay fit and focused over the winter," she says.
Spot prizes are awarded across the board along with cash prizes for the first three in each of the long rides as well as the first woman. The Winter Fun Rides series also supports the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance. Dynamo Events will make a donation to the charity while participants can make a donation when registering or on the day.
