Aug 6th, 12. Kiwi international Alex Ray, known as the shortest guy in the peloton, took his first win of the international season last week when he won the Profonde van Lommel Criterium in Belgium.

22 year old Ray has been in Belgium since March racing for Bianchi Lotto NHT.

He feels his form has been building since leaving NZ, but until now things haven't always 'clicked'.

"This win has been a long time coming. I have been close to success a few times this season but haven't managed to pull off a win until now," he told RoadCycling.co.nz

"There were a few really good riders at the race and the pace was hot from the start. At first I was very nervous as my legs felt heavy and my heart rate was very high.

"After a few laps, NZ's Cameron Karwoski, a Canadian rider and myself made a breakaway on the very tight circuit. Luckily for us some showers came through and our advantage grew."

The showers caused further consequences later in the race, with Ray and his breakaway companions all hitting the deck - but it was not all bad for the young Kiwi.

"With about 8 laps (14km) to go, the Canadian rider drove hard through a really slippery cobbled chicane. He hit the ground, I went over him and Cam went straight over me.

"My first instinct was to pick up my bike and go. There was no way I was letting go after 4 months with no victory and having spent so long in the breakaway.

"Luckily I pulled it off and finished over 30sec ahead of 2nd place. That was my first crash this year and hopefully my last. I'm sure it won't be my last win though!

Ray's international season continues until late September, plenty of time for more wins.
