Meenhorst shows his talent in Worlds U23 road race

alexmeenhorst_2009thumbSep 27th, 09. Alex Meenhorst promised to do his supporters proud, and that's exactly what the young kiwi did in the U23 World Championship road race last night.

"Thanks everyone for the support for Worlds! I'll do you proud!," was Meenhorst's final Facebook post before last night's big race in Mendrisio.

For 12 of the 13 laps over the 179.4km race, Meenhorst was in the front bunch with the best of the world's young riders.  Only on the final lap, when the pace increased significantly, did he drop from the select group and not manage to bridge back up, he finished 37th.

Meenhorst was one of only 72 of the original 166 starters, and the only kiwi, to finish the race.

Fellow kiwis Sam Bewley and Clinton Avery abandoned during the race, but so far there hasn't been any word from the New Zealand camp in Switzerland to tell more about what happened.

Meenhorst knows the mountains and hillsides of Switzerland, he spent his international season based in Zurich where he had many great opportunities, including a top level race alongside the likes of Christophe Moreau, Thor Hushovd and Heinreich Haussler.

Meenhorst's most recent success was in the GP Gansingen a one day/two stage, tour in Switzerland where the kiwi won a stage, and the King of the Mountain, sprint ace and overall classifications. Great motivation for the Worlds.

Today's race was won by one of the pre-race favourites, Romain Sicard.  His attack on the final lap was so fast it split the remnants of the peloton and allowed the Frenchman to cross the finish line 27sec in front of his nearest rivals.
