Best of the bunch was Hayden Roulston, Cervelo Test team, in 17th position, 8 seconds behind winner Fabian Cancellara. Phil Liggett commented on Roulston's comeback from health issues saying "he is now back at the top end of this sport".
Roulston had the same time as legendary Oscar Freire, the overall winner of the sprinters jersey in last year's Tour de France and three times World Road Racing Champion. Roulston has more than silenced his critics proving his own "comeback" is a success.

Peter Latham and Jeremy Vennell who both ride for Bissell Pro Cycling Team, were one second behind Roulston in 19th and 21th positions respectively. 2009 is Peter Latham’s first year as a professional cyclist, but he is hardly new to the sport. Latham is a two time NZ track Olympian, a previous National Time Trial and National Road Race Champion and also won a Commonwealth Games Track medal. Jeremy Vennell received some great TV camera coverage with his New Zealand TT champion black and white skinsuit rather than the standard team jersey. Vennell and Latham contributed to their team Bissell Pro Cycling's 4th place Team classification up there with the best teams in cycling: Columbia-Highroad, Garmin-Slipstream, and Astana. These three kiwis beat the following TT specialists that had been picked as those to watch in today's stage:
Glen Chadwick, NZ, Rock Racing, had the honour of being the first rider on the course today and finished in 90th position out of the total field of 136.
