Kiwi Top 10s in NVGP Women's Roundup

nvgp_09_logoJun 15th, 09. Cath Cheatley finished the Nature Valley Grand Prix with a 5th placing in today's tough Stillwater Criterium, moving her up to 8th in the final GC just behind fellow kiwi Jo Kiesanowski.

Kiwi Top 10 results

The Nature Valley Grand Prix is the top ranked women's professional cycling race in the United States. Thousands of fans line the streets, the press is there in full force and any results in this event get noticed widely.

In addition to Jo Kiesanowski and Cath Cheatley's 7th and 8th overall General Classification result, another top 10 kiwi result was earned by Lauren Ellis.  Lauren, racing for the NZ Jazz Apples team, finished 7th overall in the Best Young Rider classification.

In the sprint classification, Jo Kiesanowski was 10th, helped along by her 2nd placing on the Stage 2 criterium.

Whilst it is great to celebrate the top ten individual riders, credit should also go to all the kiwi women who supported their team's results with smart race tactics throughout the six day event.

Jo Kiesanowski's Team TIBCO was 1st in the Team Classification, Toni Bradshaw's Lip Smacker 2nd and Cath Cheatley's Colavita Sutter Home 3rd.

"We always want to get the overall win," said Kiesanowski, "but we showed that we were the strongest team overall again this week. It was a testament to the team that we finished all eight riders as well."

"The whole week was good," she added. "We rode really well together. I'm looking forward to the next stage race."

The NZ Jazz Apples team also finished in the top 10 place with their three kiwis Lauren Ellis, Marina Duvnjak, Malindi Maclean and imports Ruth Corset and Dotsie Bausch finishing 8th overall.  Dotsie and Ruth finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the Queen of the Mountains competition.

Today's final stage played out as expected when the field quickly shattered after the first trek up the 22% gradient of Chilkoot Hill.

Up the front of the race when Kristin Armstrong, in the yellow jersey, broke free, only two riders could bridge to her.  Shelley Olds (Proman Hit Squad) and Andrea Dvorak (Colavita/Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light) followed Armstrong's attack holding on to her wheel to take second and third over the line.

Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo) won the overall classification (for the 4th time) as well as the best climber and most aggressive rider classifications.

Fourteen seconds back a group of eight including Cheatley and Kiesanowski had their own battle. In the final sprint Cath Cheatley was just beaten over the line by Amanda Miller (Lip Smacker) after these two riders gained a few metres' leap on their group.

"I love racing and I love helping my team to win" Cheatley told RoadCycling.co.nz  earlier in the season.

Cheatley finished in 5th position gaining two places on the GC from 10th to 8th.  Jo Kiesanowski finished 2s back in 7th.
