Gavazzi takes 3rd stage in Beijing
Oct 11th, 12. Team Astana's Francesco Gavazzi won the 3rd stage of the Tour of Beijing, denying Sky's Edvald Boassen Hagen a solo victory.
The 162.5km stage saw a breakaway form early on, which included Kiwi George Bennett. The break was pulled back near the start of the final climb, which saw a few riders attempt to get away from the bunch.
With 3.5km to go Euskatel Euskadis Igor Anton Hernandez attacked, gapping the peloton. Sky's Edvald Boasson Hagen then caught Hernandez, immediately putting the pressure on and opening up a sizeable gap on the field.
With the gap opening up, this looked like the move of the day. However it was not to be for Boasson Hagen, who to his disbelief was caught just before the line by Gavazzi and Garmin Sharp's Daniel Martin, putting him in 3rd position.
